Niki Caro; writed by=Lauren Hynek; 2020; Countries=USA. After watching the trailer(s) for the new live action version of mulan I am left feeling slightly skeptical of the continued trend of Disney live actiin remakes. When I went to see the new Jungle Book I was amazed at how wonderfully they had recreated one of my favorite childhood cartoons without ruining my love of the original or the story itself. Now, after the long list of live actions versions of D-classics, I was so excited to see Mulan was next on the roster. I love the original cartoon Mulan. It was/is quintessentially Disney. They took a fable from centuries ago and put a Disney spin on it. Which makes it so hard to want to see something that is entirely different than the story I loved. I get that Mushu wasnt a part of the original fable. Or the story that popularized Mulan, but that doesnt matter. Mushu was the Disney element and I liked it. What draws me to disney films is not their accuracy or faithfulness to the original tales, it is the "Disney of it all. I like that they bring lightheartedness into tense stories. I dont want another Chinese action film. I want the Mulan I loved as a kid and more importantly- the Mushu.
Ok, so as we have all seen, most people aren't really that keen on the new design that Mulan has. Most people's knowledge of her without a doubt come's from the Disney movie, which while of course not being really that accurate, does lay out the basic principle of Mulan. She's a woman, who is very skilled in martial arts, sword fighting, etc. who takes her elderly father's place in an impending war. The most important part of her story, and the one thing almost everyone knows about Mulan, is that she had to disguise herself as a man, as it was a BIG no no for women to be fighting alongside men, with the threat of her exposure resulting in her execution. Hi-Rez gave this explanation as to why they decided to ditch the original design in favor of a version where everyone already knows that she's a woman, thus there being no need for her to hide her identity. Here you can see the 2 versions of Mulan's design: PTS Version, that is more in tact with her original lore Blog post version, that's representing Mulan's SMITE lore Now, I get that Hi-Rez wants to do their own thing, and having badass women in a video game is never a bad thing. BUT here's the thing about Mulan: The only "special" thing about her is her disguise. Seriously. You take that away from her, and she's just a woman who's good with a sword, and could just as well be any of these characters. People were already on the fence with Mulan joining SMITE, and taking away the disguise, her one iconic thing, does not help. It'd be like taking away Mjolnir from Thor or The Excalibur from Arthur. These are the things that these guys are known for. Once again, I have nothing against Mulan being proud of her femininity, but I think it could be done so much better than to just give her a boob armor, and revealing her whole identity. That's all I wanted to say.

Level 1 Bumba's Mask + Traveler's Shoes + Shield of Regrowth 130 points 8 days ago edited 8 days ago Isn't the entire point of Mulan that she disguised herself as a man? The old one was ambiguous enough, but who would ever mistake this new one for a man? Her face is no longer covered, and her armor has breasts. I mean, save that for another character. What a strange addition. Maybe she's a stance god, or something. level 2 They changed her lore so that it's after her main story and she has ascended to godhood and no longer has to hide that shes a woman. It's still stupid though, and I really can't think of a good reason for it besides they wanted to add fan service skins and can't do that with a manly one. level 2 Females in full plate are more atractive than females in boob llate fight me. You cowards! level 1 Already said it in another post but hopefully that will appear as the T2 skin if they're adamant on keeping the new art as the main model. level 2 I actually like both of these. I think a T2 would be very nice to satisfy both tastes. level 1 It might be the scarf, but I preferred the old one better. level 2 I also noticed they thinned out her eyebrows. The older eyes make her look much more severe and disciplined (kinda of like the lore suggests. Now shes just another pretty girl. level 1 Hi-Rez: So, we need to add a character to the game that is known for being a woman who dressed up as a man. First card art: How about me? I have obvious feminine features, but I hide my face with a scarf, and wear an androgynous armor. Hi-Rez: That's actually pretty go. Second card art: I have boob armor. Hi-Rez: Sold! level 2 Yeah, from a theme and a practical perspective the first look was much better. Ever since I was told about how impractical "boob plate" is, I nearly groan every time it's implemented now. level 1 Look Hi-Rez, I like boobs too, man, but her previous design was seriously badass. This worries me for what they'll do to Baba Yaga level 2 I mean they already made Izanami show leg and they have Mother Earth in a bikini. I think its fair to say that Baba Yaga is gonna be a GILF level 2 Shes gonna be Aphra-cadabra 2. 0. level 2 nah, old women are basically the only type of female that can be ugly apparently. level 2 Baba Yaga is going to look 40 at most and have giant fuckin honkers. Like some real gahonkazoogas. level 2 I read it as baby yoda at first. level 1 I think its cool that they wanted to embrace her female identity, but there was something exciting about having a god that presents androgynously to match with their lore. What really ruins the design for me is the overly-feminine appearance and the defined chest armor for the sake of boobs. The previous design was badass. That being said, Im still very excited for her kit and can not wait to try her out.

The film was originally planned to start filming in October 2010, but was canceled. [17] On March 30, 2015, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Disney had restarted development of the live-action adaptation with Chris Bender and J. C. [19] Casting [ edit] Liu Yifei will be playing Mulan in the remake. Since several recent Hollywood films were accused of whitewashing, Mulan has been under intense scrutiny since The Hollywood Reporter reported that Disney was making a live-action adaptation of Mulan. An online petition titled "Tell Disney You Don't Want A Whitewashed Mulan. received more than 100, 000 signatures. [4] On October 4, 2016, Disney announced that a global search for a Chinese actress to portray the title role was underway. [20] A team of casting directors visited five continents and saw nearly 1, 000 candidates for the role with criteria that required credible martial arts skills, the ability to speak clear English, and star quality. [21] On November 29, 2017, Chinese-American actress Liu Yifei was cast in the film to portray the titular role of Mulan. Many celebrated this as a win for diversity in Disney films. [24] According to the report, published on November 22, 2016, he said that he would like to see an Asian director leading the film, but he himself had to decline because he was still obliged to promote his film Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. [25] Next, Disney met with Jiang Wen for the position; finally on February 14, 2017, Niki Caro was hired as the director of the film, which made Mulan the second Disney film with a female director and a budget above 100 million following A Wrinkle in Time. [28] Music [ edit] On March 17, 2018, director Niki Caro revealed that the remake won't feature any songs from the original film. [29] It was reported on June 30, 2019, that the film will feature instrumental versions of the original film's songs. [30] On January 13, 2020, Caro explained that the songs were deleted because she felt it didn't fit with her realistic vision of the film, though she still tried to "honour the music from the animation in a very significant way. 31] On August 22, 2018, it was reported that Harry Gregson-Williams, who previously worked with Caro on The Zookeeper's Wife, is set to compose the film's score. [38] 39] It had been originally set for a November 2, 2018, release, and then the film was delayed, with The Nutcracker and the Four Realms taking its old slot. [20] Controversy [ edit] A call to boycott the film began when Liu Yifei reshared an image posted by Chinese newspaper People's Daily. The image included a quote from Chinese reporter Fu Guohao who worked for the Global Times and was subsequently assaulted by violent protesters during the 2019 Hong Kong anti-extradition bill protests: I support Hong Kong police. You can beat me now. What a shame for Hong Kong. This sparked international controversy, with Liu being accused of supporting police brutality. The hashtag, BoycottMulan, has since started trending supporting a boycott of the movie. [40] 41] 42] In response to the controversy, Liu was not present at the 2019 D23 Expo, which gave fans an exclusive sneak peek of the film. No need to go over the ocean if you want to hunt down bad people. level 1 The Mulan movie is close to 20 years old level 2 Shes the actress cast in Disneys live action remake, not the original voice actress. level 1 Walt Disney was a nazi sympathizer. The decision to keep the Mulan actress is totally unsurprising. level 1 Well, I guess the only thing we should do is not watch this live-action remake with her in it. So Disney gets the message hit them where it hurts which is their wallet. Anyone else doesn't get why mainstream media ignore when minorities do fuck up shit online but they drag white people if they did fuck up things? Not to bring race into it but I'm starting to question why white people need to get cancelled while a lot of minorities in the media get away with a lot. The first person I think of is Nikita Dragun she human trash and yet she gets away with everything until recently. Like I bet any money Liu Yifei is not going to get asked to be stepping down from her role they going to keep her even if Disney fans want her to step down, they won't listen. But if it was a white girl cheering on police brutality I bet the reaction would be different. level 1 Most people from mainland China agrees that Hong Kong rightfully belongs to China because of the handover in 1997. She states that she STILL supports the action of the HK police because there is a group of protesters have gone too far and is creating violence and disruptions to HK citizens lives and the HK police is trying to manage and contain. A lot of the actions by the protestors are not being reported in Western news to demonize China and the HK police force.
Fun fact, Sun Tzu almost certainly didn't actually write the art of war. It was likely someone 100 years later attributing to him these ideas pushing pragmatism, professionalism, and subservience to the state in the military. He's listed as the author because it's traditionally attributed to him, and we don't know who wrote the texts recording his advice.

Bow. well, that's new. So, we had Heimdallr, a hunter using thrown melee weapons with warrior stats, then a warrior with a bow. Edit: So, she's the representative of Humanity? Damn, felt like that could have had major potential. Level 1 This guy is in a lot of stuff as a father figure. Its not nefarious level 2 Its not nefarious The picture is a pretty obvious joke level 2 Tzi Ma is groomed to take over the Xi character in future movies level 1 Well it is Disney, so a Pooh crossover makes some sense. level 1 That means Mulan studied in the US. level 1 In what way will this “please” the Chinese audience? The role will be surely be mocked as hell, just like Winnie the Pooh. And Im sure the Chinese audience and the movie censorship administration or whatever its called knows it all to well. level 1 At least they didn't have Scarlett Johansson playing Mulan. level 2 That had a narrative purpose about westernization and white washing. level 1 The whole movie is made to please the Chinese audience. There'll probably be a bit that shows Mulan travelling to the concreted coral atolls of the South Sea. level 2 I'm also sure there's going to be a subtle subtext about how important "family" is, and how in the end all good sons and daughter need to return "home. I'm also going to guess that, in the US/international release, there will be a small scene/detail hinting at some kind of homosexual relationship in the background, which will be removed in the Chinese release. level 2 Why is this getting downvoted? That's a solid observation - is the flu quarantine making you bored? level 1 Xi JinPing with a man-bun is what China needs atm. level 1 Almost all movies now are made to please Chinese audience. level 1 Everything is done to please the chinese audience, it feels like sometimes level 2 I dunno, prior to this it was all done to please the American audience. Cause. they buy movie tickets? Huh. sell to the crowd what the want, what a novel concept level 1 The actor, Tzi Ma, looks like Xi Jinping. He's a good actor and fits the role perfectly. How is this shilling for China? level 1 Is OP fresh off the boat teacher who still can't tell Chinese people apart? level 1 It's going to be a flop since it's a CCP targeted movie and the studios will fake the numbers level 1 I don't understand. Two picture of Chinese people.

The actress who plays Mulan supports Hong Kong police. She is a CCP dog. Reddit Inc 2020. All rights reserved Cookies help us deliver our Services.
