Heartwarming movie with a of powerful message! Highly recommend. Only played at movie festivals at this time (unfortunately) Windows on the World is a great movie that will appeal to many of us. It is well written, new in perspective and very moving.
Along with Burning, it is the best movie that I have watched so far this year.

That couldn’t have been further from the truth, the two of them and who they were working with were intelligent. They weren’t just going to attack us head-on if they could use other means. And they had those other means, they knew how to utilize the rules of the tradition to their advantage. They could predict what we were going to do and respond accordingly. They weren’t in a rush…they were willing to play the long game if they had to. Time was not on our side in this situation. The longer we waited, the more the scales tipped into Riley and Fife’s favor. With the drug-addled junkies closing in on us from all sides, I looked around for a way to escape. I could hear people on the streets beginning to panic. The attack had caused fear in people, but it didn’t look like we’d be getting any help for our situation. There were only five people around us, but their spacing made getting through them impossible without coming within arm’s length. Eri pointed her hand at the ground, and the purple glow from it once again pulsed. The air around us seemed to warp and distort. I watched as our five attackers suddenly were lifted off of their feet and into the air. It wasn’t only them however, as a car parked beside us began lifting off of the ground too as well as anything else that wasn’t held to the ground. Even the rain falling around us stopped and floated, forming bubbles in the air. It was the first time I had seen her pull this trick out. It would have been fairly comedic, seeing people struggle to move as they were levitating in the air. Given the circumstances, I couldn’t get a good laugh out of it. For whatever reason, I was able to keep my feet planted to the ground. Eri and I rushed past the assailants and towards her car. When we reached it, I looked back to see gravity correct itself, and everything that was floating fall back to the ground with a crash. “Shit! ” I heard Eri say. Turning to see what happened, I saw our attackers had gotten to the car and slashed all of its tires. It seems like they weren’t planning on letting us get away that easy. I saw the hooded man sprinting at us, knife held high in the air. As he brought it down, I pushed Eri aside and held up my hand. The knife tore into my palm, stabbing through so I could see the blade sticking out of the back of my hand. I cried out in pain as I wound back my other hand and delivered a punch to the man’s nose. He reamed back, blood flowing freely from his nostrils, a look of pure bliss on his face. I looked at my hand, the knife still embedded into it, ripping it out I tossed it to the ground. Seeing the blood and rain mixing together, dripping down my hand, I felt my vision start to pulse. The world around me was starting to tint red, I blinked, but the tint grew stronger. “Feel their love! Let it envelop you in its warm embrace! ” The hooded man yelled. I wondered what the hell was happening to me, then looking down at the knife, I realized it. It was the same knife the man had cut his tongue open with, his blood coating part of the blade. His blood must have got into my body. It was causing me to suffer the effects of the Tiger’s Blood. Another man charged towards me, wielding a rust-coated crowbar. Right before he got close enough to swing, he got blasted back, flying through the driver's side window of a nearby car. I could Eri starting to pant behind me. A woman charged towards us, knife in hand. She too was blasted away, her body tumbling across the asphalt and coming to a stop when she crashed into a light post. Both of them got back to their feet, even though they must have broken bones and were bleeding. They showed no sign they were in any pain whatsoever. It felt like the only way we would be able to stop them would be to kill them or break their bodies enough that fighting back was impossible. I began to feel the pain in my body subside, replaced instead by this strange but enjoyable sensation. To think that even just trace amounts of the drug could subject you to its effects was a scary thought. I needed to get it out of my system, on top of that, we needed to get away from these maniacs. But we had no option to run, no a fight with them was going to be unavoidable. It was then I heard a scream from down the street, looking towards it. I saw that a couple of the assailants had gotten distracted with two pedestrians. A mother and her teenage daughter. The woman with the nail bat was relentlessly beating the mother on the ground. Each strike hitting a place where it wouldn’t be lethal but would cause excruciating pain. While the daughter was being dragged off by another man towards a parked van. It was happening again, my mind going back to the events at the university. More innocent people were being attacked and murdered, and I was going to do nothing about it. Eri darted past me, she raised her hand up to the hooded man’s chest. The purple glow around it intensified, the man looked down a smirk on his face, as he went soaring through the air and through the display window of a nearby clothing store. I could see that Eri was running towards the mother and daughter, she must have felt at fault for them being in danger. These drug addicts were here for her anyhow, of course she would feel guilty for others being put in danger because of her. I watched the man with the crowbar, and the knife-wielding woman chased after Eri. What was I doing? The thought pervaded into my mind. Was I just going to sit here and do nothing? Eri was clearly getting tired, what if her powers gave out? Was I just going to stand by while she got killed? No…I couldn’t keep doing nothing. Not when there was something I could do about. I’d flush this drug from my system, and at the same time I’d stop being a coward for once. I ran towards Eri, she was already a ways down the street. The man and woman were much closer to her than I was, in just a few moments they would be on top of her. I had to move faster, I pushed myself harder and felt my body becoming lighter. I slammed my shoulder into the woman knocking her and bolted in front of the man as he was swinging down his crowbar at Eri. I grabbed the crowbar and held it back. “Kevin? ” Eri looked over at me, puzzled. “You go help them, I can handle these two. ” I said. Eri nodded to me and continued down the street. The woman got up and charged at me and shoved the knife into my stomach, twisting it into my guts. Crimson soaking through the fabric of my shirt. It didn’t feel painful, it felt invigorating. It was time to give it what it wanted. I used my free hand and grasped the woman by her throat, feeling my skin beginning to peel apart, the black fur sprouting out from beneath. My bones and muscles beginning to shift and alter my flesh. My clothing beginning to tear and fall from my body as it grew too large to be contained by them. I found myself growing taller and taller, now looking down at my would-be killers. My hand turned to a claw, ever so slightly digging into the woman’s neck. My mouth jutted forward into a muzzle, saliva trickled down from my new mouth as my lips curled into a snarl. The red tint in my vision being replaced by a drab-colored world. I ripped the crowbar from the man’s hands and slammed the back of it across his face. As he stumbled back, I threw it at him, watching it slam into his chest and send him collapsing to the ground. I lifted the woman up off of the ground and raised my claw, readying to pierce it into her stomach and rip out whatever I grasped. Before I followed through with the attack, I stopped. I couldn’t follow through with the attack and kill the woman. Feeling all of the rage and bloodlust pumping through my veins was a drug not dissimilar to what affected them. To destroy them would have filled me with nothing but satisfaction. It was what the wolf thrived on…bloodshed. I couldn’t let it have full control, and if I killed even one of them…I didn’t know if I would be able to hold myself back. I just needed to incapacitate them. I tightened my grip on the woman’s neck. Making sure not to gouge my claws into the supple flesh of her neck. Instead choking her until I saw her consciousness fade. Tossing her onto the ground, I turned my attention to the man who was getting up, he picked up his crowbar and charged at me. They showed no sign of being afraid in the slightest. No pain, no fear, complete obedience. This drug would seem to have made the perfect soldier. To think at one point, these people were just ordinary. To think it was this easy for them to lose themselves. As the man swung the crowbar at me, I caught his arm at the elbow. I bent his arm back, causing the bone to pierce through his skin. The man didn’t cry in pain as he should’ve, instead moaning with delight. I grabbed him by the throat and lifted him up, preparing to choke him out the same as the woman. There was a sudden sharp pain by my neck, as I turned to see the hooded man had returned with his knife dug deep into my collar bone. The hooded man had jumped onto my back. He pulled the knife out and stabbed it in again and again. Cackling the entire time, blood spraying out from the wound onto his face. I howled out in pain and tossed the man I was holding across the street. I grasped the hooded man and threw him overhead onto the ground. Slamming his back against the asphalt. His head hit the concrete from the force of the throw, knocking him out. I gritted my teeth and dragged the hooded man’s unconscious body up off of the ground. This burning hatred filled my mind. My lips curled back and drool spilled down my mouth as my maw widened to take a bite out of his neck. I stopped myself right before biting down, dropping the hooded man to the ground, and stepping back from him. I was starting to feel my mind being torn away from me. It was beginning to take everything I had not to give in to my animalistic desires. I couldn’t lose myself, I had to put a stop to it. Before I lost control of myself. I took a look over towards where Eri was and saw that she succeeded in helping the mother and daughter. The two junkies that were after them both lying incapacitated on the ground. The mother and daughter were huddled together, as I saw Eri running over towards me. I could hear the sounds of police sirens closing in. I had to get out of this form before they arrived. “Kevin…” Eri muttered, I could tell she was worried about how I was struggling to maintain my sense of self. “Mnh…” I tried to tell her I was okay, but the words caught in my throat. I tried to clear my head, but the wolf was howling at me to continue. It wasn’t satisfied with this, it wanted to rip and tear to its heart’s content. I couldn’t let it gain control, there was no telling what it would do if it could roam the streets freely. I felt something grasp onto my arm and noticed Eri looking up at me. The look of worry she just had gone. “It’s okay…you can do this. ” I pushed all thoughts from my mind and located that emotionless state. Gradually I returned to my human form, feeling the fur fall away from my skin and my body shrinking. I breathed a sigh of relief. Looking at Eri, who had a smile on her face. Looking behind Eri, I noticed something odd. Standing beside a parked car, the car that was following us to begin with, was a young woman. She was holding a digital camera aimed at us. She looked terrified. Eri followed my gaze towards the woman with the camera. When the woman noticed both of us looking at her, she bolted into her car and sped off. Why was she here? And why was she in such a hurry to leave? I couldn’t think about that very long before realizing the cops would be arriving soon, and I had no clothing on. Luckily, I had thought a bit ahead on this kind of thing happening. So there was an extra set of clothes sitting inside of Eri’s car. I hadn’t planned on this sort of thing happening today or anything. But it doesn’t hurt to be prepared just in case. I got myself dressed inside of the car, just in time to see the cop cars coming to a stop on the street. Needless to say, there was a decent bit of explaining to do, but when the cops found out the five people who attacked us were all under the influence of Tiger’s Blood, they were quick to pin all of the damage to the surroundings on them. It was odd how almost unconcerned with Eri and I the officers were. Even the mother and daughter, who Eri helped and who had to have seen her powers, didn’t know precisely how Eri helped them. I had heard that the demon intervenes in matters like this to ensure the tradition can be carried out in the way it wants. It was surreal seeing it happen right in front of me, though. The officers arrested all five people, the more injured ones being taken to the hospital first. The cops ended up chalking the whole thing up to a random act of violence. Since the attack fit the others like it that happened around the city, there was no way for them to know that they were targeting Eri specifically unless we told them. They didn’t even question that much or want us to head down to the station. Under normal circumstances, this sort of conduct would have been unusual. Eri ended up getting her car towed to a shop, and we had to call Miranda to come and pick us up. She wasn’t too happy about us getting into her car soaking wet but was more concerned about what had happened. “So, they’re using their blood magic to make drugs that control people. How the hell did they come up with that? ” Miranda stated after having the situation explained to her. “I don’t know. Ever since they disappeared, I knew they had to be planning something, but something like this…this is just horrible. ” Eri said. “Why did they disappear? ” I asked. “Riley and Fife never really cared about anyone but each other. Even after they were given surgery to part the two of them, they would just spend every waking hour together. Then one day when they turned eighteen, the two of them just left one night, and we hadn’t seen or heard anything about them since. There is no way of knowing exactly why they left. Same with our other sisters who just left the family. ” Miranda said. “Would it have to do with the tradition? ” Miranda shook her head. “Not for those. There was just something…off about them. ” “Jennifer wants us to work with her to stop them. “Makes sense, she can’t do much against them otherwise, which means those girls have free reign of the city. Are you going to help her? ” Miranda asked. Eri was silent for a few moments, staring out at the rain. “We don’t have much of a choice, do we? If I don’t do anything, they are just going to wait and kill me at their leisure. “They’ll just keep on ruining people’s lives all because I’m too afraid to die…” “Eri…you know that” Miranda started to say before Eri interrupted her. “No…as long as I can do something about it, it’s my fault. ” Tears begin to fall down Eri’s face. I guess Eri had the same invasive thoughts that I had. How that guilt eats away at you, even though what is happening is out of your control. “Take us to the station, I want to talk to Jennifer. Let her know that I will do whatever I can to help. ” “You sure? ” Miranda asked. Eri nodded her head. “I’m sure, I need to do this. Kevin…you’re still with me, right? ” “Of course. ” I replied. The decision seems so easy to make in hindsight, just your classic good versus evil predicament. Yet we would be dragged through hell by the end of this hunt. Not only us, but hundreds of other people would have their lives irreparably changed by the events. And the demon would get a show the likes of which he probably never imagined.

(2019) The Lighthouse The story in this film is shrouded in mystery but the clues and tools needed to decipher it do exist and with a rewatch, finding them felt so rewarding. It's the kind of movie that I want to make my friends watch, simply so I have someone to discuss it with. It's one of the best horror films I've ever seen. Runners-up: Little Monsters, Fury, I Am Mother, Glass, Crawl, Ma, Godzilla: King of Monsters, Us, Color Out of Space, Ready or Not, Midsommar, Zombieland: Double Tap, The Head Hunter (2018) The House That Jack Built In my mind, this is Lars Von Trier's masterpiece and Matt Dillon's best performance to date. It's hands down the most fun, engaging, darkly humorous, disturbing, bleak and creative film I've seen this year. Runners-up: Annihilation, Apostle, The Bad Seed, Summer of 84, Mandy, Upgrade, Calibre, Hereditary, A Quiet Place, Bird Box, Lords of Chaos, Head Count, The Witch in the Window, Dragged Across Concrete, Braid, Climax, Incident in a Ghostland, Hold the Dark, The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot, The Strangers: Pray at Night, Suspiria, Halloween, Monster Party (2017) Mother! Mother! is an incredibly conscientious statement on the nature of humanity, steeped in religious allegory. The last 30 min or so makes up for any weariness over the pacing. It’s one of the most intense, impressive sequences I’ve seen in a horror film in the last decade. The absolute perfect icing on the cake for what is such a masterful dip into surrealism. Runners-up: Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil, The Endless, You Were Never Really Here, The Ritual, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Creep 2, Brawl in Cell Block 99, It, It Comes at Night, Get Out, Tigers are Not Afraid, Jungle, Cold Skin, The Crecent, Pyewacket, A Ghost Story, The Bar (2016) The Wailing The photography direction and cinematography are astounding. I could pause the movie at any given moment and marvel at an iconic photograph. This film had me guessing up until the very last moments. It’s exactly what I crave, an unapologetically evil entry into horror cinema. Runners-up: Better Watch Out, Boys in the Trees, We are the Flesh, ‘Sweet, Sweet Lonely Girl’, Here Alone, The Girl with all the Gifts, Raw, Nocturnal Animals, A Dark Song, The Void, Split, Train to Busan, Arrival, The Eyes of My Mother, Blair Witch, The Good Neighbor, Don’t Breathe, Phantasm: Ravager, Swiss Army Man, Before I Wake, The Shallows, In the Deep, Are We Not Cats, Sam was Here (2015) The Witch I really think it focused on expressing the idea of evil being a completely separate entity from god and that the characters in the film can do fuck-all about it. The incredible struggle that every single character is going through in this film is palpable in literally every shot. It’s astounding how well Robert Eggers was able to get this exposition across with such little dialogue. Runners-up: Tale of Tales, The Gift, The Devil’s Candy, I Am a Hero, The Lure, Evolution, Hell House LLC, Landmine Goes Click, Green Room, The Visit, The Final Girls, Southbound, Baskin, Remember (2014) Alleluia It’s a gritty tale of heartbreak, loneliness, jealousy, greed and obsession. It’s just fucking real; the kills feel impulsive and impactful. It’s also shot in this dirty format where both killer’s (the woman’s more so) physical appearances degrade as the film progresses. Runners-up: It Follows, Zombeavers, Interior, Backcountry, Dig Two Graves, The Taking of Deborah Logan, A Girl Who Walks Home Alone at Night, What We Do in the Shadows, The Voices, The Town that Dreaded Sundown, Wolfcop, Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead, Creep, The Babadook, Tusk, Honeymoon, As Above So Below, Life After Beth, The One I Love (2013) The Conjuring One of the most established and refined supernatural horror films ever made. James Wan’s style is immortalized here and would go on to be imitated by dozens of other horror filmmakers. Runners-up: Insidious: Chapter 2, Pee Mak, The Sacrament, Escape from Tomorrow, Oculus, We Are What We Are, Coherence, Evil Dead, Afflicted, Horns, I Spit on Your Grave 2, V/H/S 2, Bad Milo (2012) Byzantium It’s really a tale of romance, even just the way it feels. There’s moving Beethoven piano music flooding a sort of neo-gothic atmosphere which, by the way, intertwined perfectly with the flashbacks throughout the film. It’s inevitable that a vampire movie would be grounded in classic elements of the sub-genre but Byzantium manages to push in its own direction, inspiring a surprising amount of mystery. Runners-up: The Battery, Antiviral, Cosmopolis, The Collection, Resolution, The Conspiracy, Chained, The Bay, Vamps, V/H/S, Sinister (2011) Sleep Tight Luis Tosar puts on a sickeningly realistic performance that boasts up an already incredible script. His character is this unstable complex mess of depression, sadism and sociopathy. He’s the world’s worst nightmare, hiding in plain sight. Runners-up: Scream 4, Take Shelter, Guilty of Romance, The Innkeepers, The Woman, Detention, The Rite, You’re Next, Kill List, Apollo 18, The Cabin in the Woods, Source Code (2010) I Saw the Devil Jee-Woon Kim makes actions feel loud and crisp. Both the villain and our protagonist are powerful in their own right. It’s both intensified but also remarkably realistic. I get that that’s a paradox of sorts but I just mean, it’s just not what audiences are used to seeing. There’s not too much left to the imagination with this one in terms of the violent sequences. Runners-up: Insidious, Trust, Trollhunter, Dream Home, Helldriver, The Crazies, Tucker and Dale vs Evil, I Spit on Your Grave (2009) Dogtooth Yorgos Lanthimos’s filmmaking style is darkly calculated with deadpan cinematography and tip-toeing dialogue thats minimalism only adds to its strangeness. I haven’t been made this uncomfortable by a film since Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom. Dogtooth offers a difficult, albeit alluring glimpse into a world of isolationism, abuse, violence and psychopathy. Runner ups: The Forbidden Door, [REC] 2, The Collector, The Fourth Kind, Orphan, Drag Me to Hell, the House of the Devil, Antichrist, Zombieland, Jennifer's Body (2008) Let the Right One In I absolutely love this film. I think it’s the pinnacle of modern horror and modern vampire film. The way this film deals with both sexuality and immortality is genius. It’s a rotten dichotomy between pedophilia and loneliness that ends up being darker than the actual violence. Runners-up: Cloverfield, The Strangers, Quarantine, Four Nights with Anna, Pontypool, Vinyan, Surveillance, Eden Lake, Martyrs, Lake Mungo, The Ruins, Cloverfield (2007) 1408 1408 captures the magic of The Twilight Zone and blends it expertly into the most horrific supernatural waterboarding experience. Runners-up: 28 Weeks Later, The Orphanage, Hansel and Gretel, Funny Games, Resident Evil: Extinction, The Girl Next Door, Trick r’ Treat, Paranormal Activity, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Stuck, The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2006) Inland Empire Inland Empire is the most ambitious conceptual interpretation of Hollywood and film making that I have ever or could ever conceive. It challenged my mind for three consecutive hours and reinvented the way I interpret his films. Runners-up: Fido, Sheitan, Severance, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, Hatchet, Slither, Final Destination 3, Bug (2005) Strange Circus Strange Circus fills all my horror holes of morbid depravity and in a miraculously graceful fashion. Much like Suicide Club, it presents itself in a gorgeously grainy, bleak fashion that draws special attention to the moments of bold color. It’s also super fucked up, in a great way. Runners-up: John Carpenter’s Cigarette Burns, Noriko’s Dinner Table, The Call of Cthulhu, A History of Violence, Lady Vengeance, Funky Forest: The First Contact, Haze, The Skeleton Key, The Decent, Doom, Hostel (2004) Shaun of the Dead This movie is just wonderful. I find it hilarious on a personal level but also so intelligently funny that it could go down as one of the greatest horror-comedies of all time. Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have an undeniable chemistry and just simply make an entire new breed of film-style. It's dry, whimsical, crass, darkly funny and wholesomely endearing. Runners-up: The Phantom of the Opera, Shutter, Dumplings, Three Extremes, Calvaire, Saw, Dead Man's Shoes, The Village, The Butterfly Effect (2003) Oldboy Everything about this film is exceptional. It looks fantastic, the acting is fantastic and Chan-wook Park wrote an incredible story. I think when you try and sell a revenge movie to someone, it can imply some degree of formulaic filmmaking but Park’s films are anything but. This one had me guessing up until the very last minute. Runners-up: Dead End, Open Water, Willard, Identity, Jug Face, High Tension, Dark Water, A Tale of Two Sisters, Gozu, House of 1000 Corpses, Jeepers Creepers 2, Scary Movie 3, Final Destination 2, Alexandra's Project (2002) The Ring The Ring is a terrifying film that relies on an unstoppable force. It utilizes one of the few shining examples of a successful grey-scale and manages to convey a horrifying sense of bleakness and helplessness. It’s better than the original. Runners-up: 28 Days Later, Blade 2, May, Dog Soldiers, Resident Evil, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, In My Skin, The Eye, Irreversible (2001) Pulse How a horror movie can make ghosts infiltrating our world through the internet not stupid is beyond me but everything here just worked. For 2001, the visual effects for the ghosts are perfect and don’t steal the spotlight away from the emotionally driven horror that makes this project successful. I’ve yet to be more moved by a horror film, this one absolutely broke me. Runners-up: *The Devil’s Backbone, Frailty, Suicide Club, Visitor Q, Ichi the Killer, Trouble Every Day, Dagon, Jeepers Creepers, Dagon, The Others (2000) American Psycho You won’t see a much better performance by Christian Bale; he’s top notch, however, the success is owed to everyone involved. It’s an excellent script, written from excellent source material and expertly directed by Mary Harron. This film is pure genius and it’s well worth noting that even if you’re not viewing the film under a super-critical lens, it’s highly entertaining. Runners-up: Fail Safe, Ginger Snaps, Final Destination (1999) The Sixth Sense I can’t praise this movie enough. It’s dark, depressing and only offers the humblest of reprieve in the end; much like what many of the films characters go through. This is M. Night’s masterpiece. Runners-up: Arlington Road, The Blair Witch Project, Nang Nak, Idle Hands, Audition, eXistenZ, Sleepy Hallow (1998) Ringu This is a benchmark in atmospheric horror and a film that spawned an entire generation of psionic horror films. It’s dark and heartbreaking. Runners-up: Blade, Bride of Chucky, Phantasm IV: Oblivion, The Faculty, Disturbing Behavior (1997) Lost Highway This film is about how powerful the human mind is and how we cope with intense guilt, fear and regret. Specifically, in this instance, the compartmentalization of murder. Although that all seems inherently negative, especially in the context of the movie, it’s really just about confronting your issues; even if that means accepting your punishment. Runners-up: The Devil’s Advocate, Funny Games, Alien: Resurrection, Cure, Cube, Event Horizon (1996) Scream Scream just may be the best meta-horror film ever made. It’s so special to me and was probably the film that sparked my fascination with horror. I watched it the year after it came out, at 8-years old, alone in my dark basement. I shut it off after the opening scene with Drew Barrymore and never saw the rest until years later. However, if I had just stuck with it, it actually evolves into this darkly funny, poignant statement on slasher films. Runners-up: Ebola Syndrome, Naked Blood: Magyaku, From Dusk Till Dawn, Crash (1995) The Addiction This was Abel Ferrara’s extremely personal vampire film that tackled addiction and through the gritty melodramatic landscape of New York, he really sheds his skin. It’s raw and rightfully claims the best film of the year. Runners-up: The Eternal Evil of Asia, Habit, The Day of the Beast (1994) In the Mouth of Madness Simply one of the best Lovecraftian films ever made. The special effects in this movie range from miniature set pieces shot up close to a full size 30-man operated partially animatronic wall of creatures. Some people will say that these 80’s style techniques hurt the production value but those people don’t know shit about shit. Runners-up: Interview with The Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles, Cemetery Man, Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1993) Return of the Living Dead 3 The entire special effects team undoubtedly got the thumbs up from Brian Yuzna on this one. It’s such a fantastic sequel to a series that seemed dedicated to devolve into ridiculousness. Runners-up: The Eight Immortals Restaurant: The Untold Story, Necronomicon: Book of the Dead, Fire in the Sky (1992) Man Bites Dog One of the strangest aspects to some horror movies is their ability to make light of ultra-violent crimes like rape and murder. Man Bites Dog will actually have you laughing out loud until you realize you’re in a kitchen watching three men rape a woman while she pleads for mercy. Whatever way you choose to digest this movie, I can guarantee you’ve never seen anything quite like it before. Runners-up: Ghostwatch, Army of Darkness (1991) The Silence of the Lambs While the film does stand out in blatant, suspenseful, scary moments; it’s the conversations between Clarice and Dr. Lecter that make it so memorable. It just adds this timeless psychological horror element that helps establish it as a classic in my eyes. Runners-up: Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky, The Addams Family, Sometimes They Come Back, Naked Lunch (1990) Der Todeskin: The Death King While often wavering between the blunt, literal message and depressive expressionism, Der Todesking manages to feel all too real. It’s one of the best arthouse-style horror films I’ve seen to date. Runners up: It, Misery, Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, Jacob’s Ladder, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Tales From the Darkside: The Movie (1989) Santa Sangre Easily the most impressive aspect of this film is the ventriloquism inspired acting. It starts out as a goofy aspect of the plot, something that doesn’t really necessarily grab you. However, by the end of the film, it’s molded into this beautiful, creepy display of possession. Runners-up: The ‘Burbs, Ghostbusters 2, The Woman in Black, Bride of the Re-Animator, Society, Intruder, The Cook, The Thief, his Wife & Her Lover (1988) The Vanishing The Vanishing is an absolutely raw tale of abduction, almost like a Norman Rockwell imagining of an American’s European vacation turned horror story. It takes this incredibly simplistic but underlying dynamic approach to horror that’s as refreshing as it is captivating. Runners-up: Child’s Play, Dead Ringers, Men Behind the Sun, Pumpkinhead, Pin, Phantasm II, Brain Damage, The Following, Halloween 4: The Return, Beetlejuice (1987) Evil Dead 2 Just from a technical perspective, everything is so fucking impressive. It’s all basically hand-done, practical effects and the camera work is just remarkable. The film leans more towards the humor side of the series but it does so both intentionally and gracefully. I adore this movie, it’s on par with the original Runners-up: Hellraiser, Creepshow 2, Near Dark, A Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors, The Witches of Eastwick, Anguish, Prince of Darkness, Angel Heart (1986) In a Glass Cage It’s an incredible movie about consequence and revenge that’s told in a manor that I think bewildered reviewers for years. It blurs the lines between right and wrong, willing to sacrifice lives in the process of condemning an extraordinary evil. The specific breed of revenge, as portrayed in this film, isn’t noble but rather an inevitable product of abuse. If you think you can stomach it, I can’t recommend this enough. Runners-up: Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, The Fly, The Hitcher, Blue Velvet, Night of the Creeps, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, From Beyond (1985) Come and See Come and See is a raw and sobering look at WW2 from the Soviet perspective. It’s one of the least “Hollywood” war movies I’ve ever seen. Some of the scenes towards the end were truly gut wrenching and will most likely stick with me for quite some time. Runners-up: Lifeforce, Silver Bullet, Fright Night, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, The Return of the Living Dead, Re-Animator, Day of the Dead (1984) A Nightmare on Elm Street This felt like a first glimpse into Wes Craven’s mind and the last glimpse into my well-rested sleep. It’s creative, vile and fucking scary. Runners-up: Poison for the Fairies, Countdown to Looking Glass, Threads, Gremlins (1983) Videodrome Videodrome is a fucking trip and it’s an incredible feat of psychological horror while also being a visually horrific movie. Runners-up: Something Wicked This Way Comes, Angst, The Day After, Special Bulletin, The Boxer’s Omen, Eyes of Fire, Christine, The Dead Zone, Cujo (1982) The Thing It’s one of the best sci-fi body-horror films ever made and the fact that no one is steeping up to say otherwise should be a clue. Runner-up: Creepshow, Poltergeist, Cat People (1981) The Evil Dead I’ve wracked my brain trying to think of a good description. This is one of the most incredible horror films ever made. It manipulated both the body and time itself to establish such a pure horror environment. Runners-up: The Howling, Halloween II, Dark Night of the Scarecrow, Ms. 45, An American Werewolf in London, The House by the Cemetery (1980) The Shining Absolute perfection. This is such an enthralling psychological horror film. Runners-up: Inferno, Hex, Altered States, Cannibal Holocaust (1979) Alien A classic and possibly the best creature film ever produced. There hasn’t ever been a better blend of sci-fi and horror. Runners-up: Salem’s Lot, The Driller Killer, The Brood, Zombie, Apocalypse Now (1978) Invasion of the Body Snatchers I love this fucking movie with all my heart, it’s seriously one of the best alien invasion movies I’ve ever seen. Runners-up: Beauty and the Beast, The Shout, Magic, Halloween (1977) Suspiria Its psychedelic, pastel, fun-house atmosphere, coupled with a fantastic score lend a benchmark aesthetic for Italian horror and well, horror in general. Many have tried to emulate it and most have failed. Runners-up: The Hills Have Eyes (1976) God Told Me To Cohen takes all this religious subtlety and blows it all up for the finale into a very Cronenberg-style conclusion. Despite all the veils seemingly being lifted at once, I still found myself unsure of what to think during some of those pivotal scenes. After the credits rolled, I was damn sure I was into it. Runners-up: The Tenant, Carrie (1975) Jaws This movie actually made people scared to go in the water. It’s almost difficult to think of a more impactful film off the top of my head. Runners-up: Deep Red, Shivers (1974) The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue This is a sleeper zombie hit and one of the best looking films from the 70’s. Runner-up: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1973) The Exorcist William Friedkin takes the time to let the characters accept their reality in a realistic manner. It’s a technique that creates a very human aspect to them and watching the mother and the priest break down actually becomes as horrific as anything else here. Runners-up: The Legend of Hell House, The Wicker Man, Don't Look Now (1972) Images Robert Altman’s Images is an exhibition into how to fully encapsulate an idea within the confines of a visually and sonically refined film. You could throw away the plot entirely and I’d still tell you this is one of the best looking films, period. Runners-up: Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key, Morgiana, What Have You Done to Solange?, Don’t Torture a Duckling, Raw Meat, Tales from the Crypt, The Last House on the Left (1971) The Devils It’s tough to tell how accurate of a representation The Devils is of what actually occurred in Loudun, France back then but either way, it seems eye-opening. It’s a very powerful film, I really enjoyed this one. Runners-up: THX 1138, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, Short Night of Glass Dolls, The Cat o’ Nine Tails, Blade the Ripper, Malpertuis, A Bay of Blood (1970) Valerie and Her Week of Wonders I would absolutely consider this a coming-of-age film and they balanced the horror and whimsical elements perfectly. For that reason alone, I don’t believe I’ve seen any other film quite like this. With a tantalizing soundtrack and colorful visuals, I really felt transported into this strange new world. Runner-up: The House That Screamed (1969) Horrors of Malformed Men I’ve never been so confused only to have everything wrap up so emotionally that the vision and artistic direction became so clear. I don’t want to ruin anything so I’ll just leave the teaser as, this film might be among the strangest Japanese horror films I’ve seen to date. Runners-up: Cremator, One on Top of the Other (1968) Hour of the Wolf Hour of the Wolf is a top to bottom, beautifully produced psychological, surrealist nightmare. Runners-up: Kuroneko, Rosemary’s Baby, Night of the Living Dead (1967) Viy This is the first and possibly only soviet horror film. For the resources they had, everything looks amazing. It’s an incredibly fluid experience that takes zero time before jumping straight into the scares. Runners-up: Wait Until Dark, ’Spider Baby or, The Maddest Story Ever Told’ (1966) Persona All of the flashing images, cuts and effects are almost unbelievably purposeful. Just 5-minutes of this films would spell pretentiousness but as a whole, it’s a masterpiece. Runners-up: Seconds, ‘Kill Baby, Kill’, Cul-De-Sac (1965) Repulsion Sonically the movie thrives in the negative. When our lead actress is being raped Polanski purposely takes her voice away, really emulating the fear and helplessness in a genuinely scary way. Couple this with a claustrophobic atmosphere and we’re given a seriously trimmed up psychological horror thriller that was way ahead of its time. Runners-up: Fists in the Pocket, Planet of the Vampires (1964) Kwaidan This is an anthology but rather than dissect each segment I’d rather just speak on the film as a whole. All four stories really encapsulate a sort of morbid beauty and tend to compliment on another over the course of the three-hour long movie. Runners-up: Castle of Blood, Blood and Black Lace, The Tomb of Ligeia, The Masque of the Red Death, The Last Man on Earth (1963) The Haunting The Haunting, despite being such an influence in the horror genre in general, seems to be an incredible lesson in use of space. Architecture, ceilings and walls are constantly the focus. Wise creates a ton of claustrophobic tension and before the story even begins to evolve, you get the sense that these individuals are indeed, trapped inside this house. Runners-up: Black Sabbath, The Birds, The Haunted Palace, Twice-Told Tales (1962) What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? This film was fantastic. Beyond the poignant statement it makes, it’s just such a solid, performance driven thriller. I’m very surprised I’ve never heard of it before today. Runner-up: Carnival of Souls (1961) The Innocents This is simply one of the most beautifully shot horror films from the early 60’s. Every frame is truly a picture and for that alone, I’d call this a must watch for horror fans. Runners-up: Mother Joan of the Angels, Pit and the Pendulum (1960) Psycho There’s a scene where Norman Bates first shows real nervousness. The actor playing him, Anthony Perkins, puts on probably the most believable performance here that I’ve ever seen. It really gave me chills. If you haven’t seen this before, it just might be the first and greatest execution of a theatrical misdirection. Runners-up: Peeping Tom, The Brides of Dracula, Village of the Damned, Jigoku, Black Sunday, Eyes Without a Face (1959) A Bucket of Blood This is such an awesome Corman film. It’s pure entertainment and just an excellent horror-comedy. Dick Miller is a great lead. (1958) Horror of Dracula Both Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee are fantastic in their roles and it’s strange to even be saying this is one of the best Dracula films at this point, after having seen so many. (1957) Curse of the Demon Certain aspects of the ending sequences don’t exactly age gracefully but for the most part, Curse of the Demon remains compelling and creepy. (1956) The Bad Seed Outstanding performances from both mothers and really just an excellent film all around. It’s probably the earliest film to tackle childhood evil in a realistic sense, without all the usual campiness. Runner-up: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1955) The Night of the Hunter The film just looks fantastic, I mean seriously, it doesn’t get much better for the era. The depth for a black and white film is incredible, especially in the backdrops. It makes for some really iconic looking scenes and those moments are probably what I’ll hold onto as time passes. The underwater shot of the car was fucking stunning. (1954) Rear Window This film just feels like Hitchcock flexing. He knows how to make the perfect theatrical experience in technicolor with all the hottest stars. Runner-up: Godzilla (1953) House of Wax House of Wax, much like other Price films, is meant to be fun. It's definitely dark and horror focused but it's also colorful and accessible. Phyllis Kirk is also a very capable female lead. (1952) The White Reindeer I don't think I've ever seen a Finnish horror film before but this was great. It's super mellow but builds into this atmospheric horror-fantasy. (1951) Strangers on a Train This is such a fantastic crime thriller and I absolutely loved the character Bruno Antony. It added such a creepy element seeing this seemingly desperate man reveal himself to be something entirely different. (1950) Sunset Boulevard It totally brings a smile to my face to say this this is, yet again, another film that had to inspire David Lynch. It's certainly film-noir but the melodrama itself is so creepily in-tune with the struggles of Hollywood actors and actresses. (1949) The Queen of Spades Dickinson managed to capture the both literally figuratively cold vibe of imperialistic Russia and I think that's one of the main components that makes it stand out to me. It certainly is an exercise in greed but within the setting you almost adopt an understanding for our main character, however devious he may be. (1948) Rope Despite a very straightforward plot, I can’t help but thinking there’s a ton going on in this movie, a lot of which was way ahead of its time. It’s not just about two men attempting to get away with murder but it also introduced this widely controversial notion of lesser lives being expendable to the more powerful sector of society. (1947) Black Narcissus This film is absolutely breathtaking. For anyone who's ever considered technicolor to look fake, blown-out and oversaturated, this is a shining example of it done right. It's an entirely created set with gorgeous artwork. This film so elegantly says what I believe religious detractors have a hard time putting into words. There's a huge portion of the movie that's confronting sexual temptation and it's an aspect that's woven into every single frame of this film. I mean that literally. (1946) Bedlam This film is hugely influential and may just be the first film to explore the horrors of being accused of insanity. It also happens to be pretty diverse between horror, cruelty, meta-humor and wholesomeness. (1945) Dead of Night This is a clear inspiration for The Twilight Zone and just the structure alone felt way ahead of its time. It’s a nightmarish journey adapting many horror traits but really building a foundation around surrealism. (1944) The Uninvited The character relationships are comically whimsical and coupled with the upbeat score, I didn’t get really any “scary” vibe from it. It’s an aspect I didn’t hate though, it’s really what this film is about, the characters. (1943) Shadow of a Doubt Joseph Cotten’s character really stands out as the focal point of the film. Hitchcock manages to build suspense throughout the film my highlighting his presence in subtle powerful ways. Whether it be through camera framing or the subversive violent tone of his dialogue, you really feel tension whenever the man is on screen. Runner-up: The Seventh Victim (1942) Cat People Simone Simon is a fantastic lead and even with the short runtime, I came to understand her character rather quickly. Tons of anxiety as well as repressed sexuality sort of hone her into this timid and frighted woman who brings her own fears to life. (1941) Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde As with any Jekyll and Hyde film, it all really hinges on the performance of the two and Spencer Tracy fucking killed this role. The first scene with him as Hyde in the bar was super creepy and also pleasantly rape-y. Is that weird to say? Runner-up: The Wolf Man (1940) The Invisible Man Returns A young Vincent Price plays our perp this time and he’s excellent as always. It’s not paced exactly as intensely as the original but I enjoyed the steady decent into madness. (1939) Son of Frankenstein Of course there’s that 1930’s cheesy sci-fi but the film as a whole is very entertaining and the set pieces are incredible. (1938) They Drive by Night This is a great fucking movie that totally embodies crime-noir. It reminds me a ton of early Hitchcock and for the 30's, the narrative is spectacularly clean. (1937) Song at Midnight It is tedious but really, not overly so. A huge aspect of this film is character and tension building and in that regard, it really works. (1936) The Invisible Ray Man I love this movie. You obviously have Boris and Bela back together but it’s just such a legitimately fun sci-fi horror film. The plot is straight out of a 1950’s nuclear propaganda film which was probably the coolest aspect. With that, the effects are also fucking top-notch. (1935) The Bride of Frankenstein Boris Karloff is the only Monster in my mind. I would even consider this film to be family friendly as he’s the sweetest version of himself. There’s no really complex character development but The Monster is undoubtedly more self-aware which makes the entire film more engaging. (1934) The Black Cat When I thought of things that struck me that were worth mentioning, I actually thought of vacation-horror. Beyond all the elements of lust and innocence, I actually was struck by how much this film probably influenced destination horror films. These films excelled at taking our protagonists out of their comfort zones, before even introducing fucked up shit to the plot. It’s smart, concise and something I feel is even worth revisiting. (1933) The Invisible Man I’m absolutely floored by the production of this film. I went in with this preconceived expectation of the invisible man solely being portrayed wearing all the rags and shit. The effects for 1933 are very impressive. Runner-up: King Kong (1932) Freaks This film was oddly charming. It was obviously filmed with the intent to make people uncomfortable. In that sense, I mean…it succeeded. It’s definitely a little fucked up, especially the 3 second shot in the final scene. For the 1930’s, that 3-second shot was definitely an “oh my holy fuck” moment. Runners-up: The Mummy, Vampyr (1931) M I feel like I, myself, never realized how far back people have been recognizing mental illness. I don’t mean in the specific and complex clinical sense, but more so, just in the obvious sense, certain displays that appeal to our natural, compassionate nature. Of course, in this film you do see the antithesis of that at times but really only to highlight the importance of law, reason and justice. Absolutely fantastic film and a staple in the horror genre with really the first truly dynamic killer that comes to mind. Runners-up: Dracula, Dr. Hyde, Frankenstein (1930) L’Age d’Or It’s very much one of the earliest, full-length, surrealist films and with that comes the usual loose narrative that can be hard to follow. When I say hard to follow, it’s probably because it wasn’t meant to be “followed”. I digested this film as sort of an anthology of poignant criticisms by the filmmakers and Dali. (1929) Seven Footprints of Satan This film is fucking insane. It’s a super surrealist spiral through satanic-based situations. It’s really indescribable. The effects and cuts are excellent. I loved the restored version I watched. I don’t even know what to say. I definitely think this inspired or at least should be mentioned as a precursor to films such as Bergman’s Hour of the Wolf. (1928) The Man Who Laughs Some people might not know but this film was the direct inspiration for the ultra-famous DC comics villain, The Joker. It’s pretty fucking incredible how much people took to this idea of someone being disfigured in such creatively sadistic manner. I would absolutely, especially with the role of Cesare in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, consider Conrad Veidt to be a horror icon. (1927) The Unknown You know, we’re still in the silent era and it does suffer from some of the text-based storytelling that silent films hinder on. However, it’s still a really fun movie. You’ve got Lon Chaney and he’s not just a modern day novelty in this. His expressionistic performance is actually the main highlight, even more-so than Joan Crawford. (1926) The Bat This may be the earliest campy, funhouse-vibe horror film ever made. It offers another level to the usual protagonist/villain structure and what comes with that is a fresh sense of unpredictability. (1925) The Phantom of the Opera Not only does Chaney look great but the labyrinth of the Opera house is also visually stunning. I’m hesitant to call this a haunted house movie but the set itself does play a pretty large role in the horror aspects of this film. That’s all that I need to say, this one definitely deserves a watch, even just to appreciate what they were able to accomplish given the technical limitations of that time period. (1924) Hands of Orlac Robert Wiene is back after one of his most influential films, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. The story itself is obviously very classic. It also happens to look fantastic. The actual film quality, as it often does in this decade, lends a great aesthetic. Where it falls short is really just in the length. The plot isn’t complex enough to warrant the runtime. The score definitely helps with that, even if it was added semi-recently. Still though, the second half the film can seem to drag. It may have no lived up to my own expectations but nevertheless, I believe it’s important in horror-film history. (1923) The Hunchback of Notre Dame I don’t know man, I’m not really digging it. It’s just too fucking long. I mean it’s good and everything, I can give credit for what was achieved given the time it was made but straight honesty, it’s not an easy watch. Why is it on this list? Well, I still believe it to be the best horror-film that came out this year. (1922) Nosferatu I’ll plainly say that I was blown away by this film. For 1922 there’s a direction of horror so understood that it’s a mockery of modern day vampire movies. (1921) Destiny This is a pretty early film in Fritz Lang’s career and it’s also one that I’ve never heard mentioned, ever. That’s strange to me because it’s a beautiful film with breathtaking visuals. I mean breathtaking not just in the photography but the editing is simply timeless. We always talk about films being ahead of their time but I didn’t even believe some of the cropping and fading effects even existed in the silent film era. Definitely just go watch this one. I’m always upfront with how digestible silent films are and this was actually an easy watch, relatively. (1920) The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari I’m not exactly sure of the filmmakers direct intentions but even if they made this film as a natural reflection of the current state, it really paints a frightening picture of obedience in Germany. Just as is, it’s a really creepy film both looks wise and just the way it’s paced. For a silent movie, the storyline was actually quite dynamic and it even has a very unexpected twist at the end. (1919) Eerie Tales This entire film is incredibly tedious and really only certain parts entertained me. With that being said though, the suicide club segment alone was really unnerving. (1913) The Student of Prague This is textbook original execution over original idea, which to me, probably describes 99% of modern film. It has a really warm look to the surviving film and is actually filled with some genuinely creepy moments, despite possibly being unintentional. This is probably the first German indie art film, which makes it an essential watch, even disregarding the leaps made in psychological horror here. I really like this film the more I talk about it. Also, the more I talk about it, the more I feel like it doesn’t deserve to be rated, as it has no real counterpart. (1912) Dr. Hyde This one is definitely good for the time period, especially in terms of storytelling. It feels much more like a full, fleshed-out idea when compared to some of its counterparts. I appreciate it for what it is. (1910) Frankenstein A ton of people don’t know that this is actually the first interpretation of Mary Shelley’s novel in film. The surviving film is very warm and gritty. I love the effects here and it’s such a big name in horror that I’m not going to try and sell it. I will say though, the effects from the creation scene remind me a ton of Hellraiser. (1909) The Sealed Room This is really just such a classic tale of jealousy and infidelity. It’s a dark fantasy that plays out the most extreme aspects of human emotion. More importantly, it’s the earliest silent film I’ve seen that uses text screens for dialogue and exposition. It’s important. Windows on the World, despite the fact that it takes place in the weeks following the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York, is a film that is urgently for our time. It is a hero's journey of a son trying to find his father in that grief-stricken landscape and the characters stand in for the millions of immigrants, legal and illegal, who contribute in their everyday lives, to the American landscape. The film seeks to counter the narrative that's all-too-prevalent in today's political and media landscape by telling a story set in America's biggest and most diverse city, at its darkest time. The script by playwright and novelist Robert Mailer Anderson (who also produced the film) is wise and completely engaging; he creates indelible characters who are ultimately inspiring and uplifting. Edward James Olmos gives what he considers to be the performance of a lifetime, and the rest of the cast is terrific as well-with a special shout-out to Glynn Turman. The direction, by Olmos's son Michael, is sure-handed, getting terrific performances from his cast, including his father, in this father-son story, and it's beautifully lensed. The music, including jazz and a title track written by Anderson, is pitch-perfect, supporting the story without getting in the way. This film should be seen by everybody-and I'm sure it will be in mainstream distribution soon, as this is a time when, although the major studios may have turned their backs on substance, terrific indie films like this one have many other possible venues. If you can't see it at a film festival, like I did, keep a keen eye out for it. Terrific and inspiring.

Depression is a vicious bitch that not only drains your happiness, willpower, and self-esteem, but a curse that also takes away the essence of who you are, locking it away deep inside your own soul. The person you once were, full of hopes and dreams, sinks into a pit so deep it feels like there's no chance of ever escaping. Every smile that appears on your weary face, is nothing more than a carefully put together facade; A mask that has to be put on every morning, just to stop people hopelessly asking what's wrong. For me personally, it wasn't the loss of myself that bothered me the most, nor the anhedonia that occupied every moment of every day. No, the worst thing was my lack of empathy for the people around me: Family, friends, strangers, their presence seemed to make no difference to me whatsoever. It felt like they could all vanish from the face of the Earth, and it just wouldn't matter. This fact would become abundantly clear a couple of days ago, when I heard a terrified woman screaming outside, in the middle of the night. It was a blood curdling call of absolute terror, hopelessness, and despair. Though partially muffled, it rang loud throughout the entire neighborhood, waking me up from an uneasy slumber. I'm ashamed to admit, that my first reaction wasn't one of concern, or even morbid curiosity. What I felt, was little more than annoyance, that someone had dared to interrupt my sleep. Insomnia had become a fateful enemy in my daily life. A not so lovely side effect from the antidepressants my doctor had put me on. So, on the rare occasion I managed to fall asleep without too much internal quarrel, it was a pain in the ass to be suddenly awoken. Logically, I knew something was wrong, that I should at the very least have tried to help. I peeked out my window, trying to figure out the source of the distress, but I couldn't quite localize the sound. Instead of risking physical harm myself, I promptly called the police. They said a patrol car would be on its way, and that they'd give assist to the panicked woman once they found her. All in all, the dispatcher didn't seem too worried about the situation. In the meanwhile, I headed outside onto my porch, intending to help the police find this poor woman, when they arrived. Once I got outside, it sounded as if the screaming came from my own backyard, but as I checked it out, I could find nothing more than overgrown weeds and junk I hadn't cleaned up yet. I circled the house a few times, until I saw a patrol car pull onto my street. Since I was unable to figure out where the screams came from, I headed back inside to let the officers deal with the situation. Minutes later, the screaming stopped. Annoyed, but most of all, tired, I returned to bed. That night, I couldn't find a single minute of rest. Just the act of falling asleep had been an uphill battle since the start of my therapy. It's not that the drugs didn't help, because they did. They allowed me to get out of bed in the morning, and get about my day without breaking down. On the other hand, they didn't eliminate the undying depression still hidden within me. It was more as if the sadness had been numbed down; Still present, desperately etching its way towards the surface. The following day was an exhausting mess of work, coffee, and numerous toilet breaks. By the time day gave way to night, I just prayed that I could finally get some much needed shuteye. Alas, sleep would elude me once more, and as midnight approached, the air was once more filled with the horrific screams of the terrified woman. I got out of bed, a hint of worry shoving its way through the hazy emotional ocean within me. That time, I didn't even hesitate before calling the police However, the concern I had for the woman being in trouble, had turned into a certainty that she was just a raving lunatic under the influence of whatever drugs she'd gotten her hands on. Again, they promised to send a patrol car, and I headed outside to wait for them, ready to flag them down once they arrived. I went around my house, and still had the unsettling feeling that the screams came from my own backyard. I searched through the tall grass, checking if someone had been hiding in the dark, obscured by plants and dirt. Then it dawned on me. The screams weren't actually coming from the yard itself, but from under the ground. Somehow, the woman had been trapped under my backyard, her screams muffled by tons of dirt. Before I could think about it any further, I noticed the same patrol car from last night, pull into my street. I ran over to the road, and waved them over, hoping they could help me solve the mystery. Only one of the two officers stepped out of the car. He was a large man, approaching me with an annoyed expression on his face. “Sir, are you the one that called us? ” he asked. “Yeah, that was me, come over and help me, please! ” I asked frantically, trying to make myself heard over the nonstop screaming. All the while, I kept my eyes fixed at the ground, trying to pinpoint the exact location. “Did you drop something? ” he asked back, barely audible over the noise. I looked up, baffled at his sarcastic tone while someone was literally screaming for their life. “What the hell are you talking about? ” “You made a call yesterday, and today, about a person in distress. Yet, no signs of trouble have been found. Do you know how seriously we take fraudulent calls? ” he asked. It didn't take more than that, to realize how oblivious he was to the situation unfolding around him. “So, where is this screaming woman? ” he asked. “Wha – what? You don't hear it? ” I asked as I pointed towards the ground. “The screaming is coming from the ground? ” he asked, as if I was pulling a prank on him. “Yes! ” Then, as he saw the serious look on my face, his tone suddenly changed from sarcastic, to one of concern. He very gently kept asking questions, not about the screaming woman, but about me. “Sir, are you on any kind of medication, or do you have a history of hearing things that aren't there? ” I shook my head, “I'm just on antidepressants, but so what? ” I said, still not understanding what he was getting at. He took a step closer, carefully approaching me as if I were some wild animal. “Sir, listen. I know this all seems distressing, but I have to tell you, there aren't anyone screaming here, no one in trouble. Other than the two of us talking right now, the entire neighborhood is completely quiet, just as it was last night. ” I didn't respond, too afraid to believe the words he said. “If you just come with me now, we can get you some help, I know some great doctors that deal with these things, ” he continued. I immediately declined the offer, which resulted in a brief argument. Eventually he agreed to leave me alone, but only if I promised to schedule an appointment with my psychiatrist, to sort out my prescription. He also politely asked me to stop calling them about the 'non-existent, ' screaming woman. By the time he'd left my backyard, the screaming had already faded away for the night. I head back to bed, questioning my own sanity. Before attempting to sleep, I did some quick research online, and learned that some unlikely side effects of my medication, were auditory and visual hallucinations. I decided then and there, to stop taking the pills, and to book an appointment with my doctor, to figure out if we could try another drug. After another, mostly sleepless night, the morning greeted me with rain clouds and harsh wind. I skipped my morning pill, and decided to take the day off work to sort myself out. Then, if I suffered a complete, mental breakdown, at least no one would be there to witness it. I spent the majority of the day just playing games and watching stupid videos online. The day actually seemed to fly by, and before long, the gray clouds in the sky became obscured by the creeping darkness of night. I felt unnaturally awake, and weirdly anxious about the screaming woman, who I'd convinced myself was nothing but a figment of my overactive imagination. While I waited for sleep to overpower me, I kept staring out into my empty yard. Once midnight rolled around, I decided I was clear to get ready for bed. As I finished up brushing my teeth, flossing, and all the other impossible, and exhausting tasks necessary to be counted as a functioning member of society, I heard the screaming return for a third time. After the horror of the haunting scream had faded, I noticed something different about the woman. The yells that had seemed terrified, and in pain, had turned to cries of sadness, of fear, and they weren't muffled even in the slightest. I rushed into my bedroom, and peered out through my window. There, in the middle of my yard, stood a worn down well, seemingly materialized out of nothing. With little thought regarding my own safety, I went outside to check it out. I peeked over the edge, and saw what looked like an endless, pitch black abyss that led into nothingness. The cries continued, somberly filling the air with overwhelming emotion. “Hello? ” I called out cautiously. “Can you hear me? ” No response. Just the inconsolable wailing of someone who sounded like they'd lost everything in the world, that ever mattered to them. “Hey, are you hurt? ” I continued. Nothing... Before calling out again, I ran around my house, and into the garage. There, I grabbed a flashlight, an unnecessarily long length of rope, and chalk to improve my grip if I had to pull her up. I shined my flashlight down the endless hole, hoping the bottom, and its victim would reveal themselves. Even while leaning over the edge, it was too dark, and the well was simply too deep. “Listen, I'm calling for help. Hang on down there! ” I said, before pulling out my phone, and calling the police. Once they'd been called for the third time, making sure to confirm I was the person who'd disturbed them twice that week; they hesitantly agreed to send someone to check it out. I started lowering the rope down the well. I estimated about twenty feet before it hit the bottom, which made it all the more bizarre that I couldn't illuminate it with my flashlight. “Tie the rope around you, and I'll pull you back up! ” I yelled, as I started fixing the other end of the rope, to the car. She still hadn't answered me, so I gave her an extra minute to fix the rope around herself. Unfortunately, once I started pulling, it became clear that she hadn't even touched it. I tried again, and again, but she never caught on. After the fifth failed attempt, I figured my best bet would be to simply wait for the police. The job would be far easier with better equipment. I waited an hour for the police to show up, but they never did. All the while, I tried to talk to the frightened woman down the well, but she didn't even acknowledge my presence. In the end, fearing that the well would vanish as quickly as it had appeared, I decided to climb down there myself. It was a heroic, but equally stupid act. Even with my past as a rock climber, but I couldn't just let her sit there all alone. “Alright, I'm coming down! ” I said, before I grabbed the rope, and started my descent. Flashlight attached to the belt, and my phone safely tucked away in my zipped pocket. The descent itself should have taken no more than half a minute. I climbed down what I assumed was twenty feet, but I still couldn't see the bottom of the well. I started to worry that I had been wrong, that it was far deeper, and that I wouldn't have the power to pull myself back up, should it go too deep. Then, for the first time since the woman's screams and cries had started haunting me, she spoke. “No, what are you doing? Leave me alone! ” she said, on top of the sobs, as if the sounds were one and the same. “What? ” I said out loudly, more confused than anything. “Please, just go away. You don't belong here! ” she said, her voice becoming clearer by the second. It was an odd sensation. It didn't actually feel like her voice was a sound I could sense, but rather as if I could interpret her cries of despair. It was a language not spoken in words, but one understood by emotion. “No, I need to get you out of - “ I tried to say before the rope just slipped. The rope itself only sank down a couple of feet, but the movement was enough to make me lose my grip. I slid down as the friction burned my palms raw, until I just let go. I was falling, not just a few feet, but for minutes on end, an infinite distance towards the black void below. I don't remember hitting the ground. I just know that once I woke up, my arm had been shattered beyond recognition, mangled and useless. My foot didn't fare much better, but the flashlight had miraculously survived the fall, and lay only a couple of feet away. After forcing myself up into a sitting position, groaning as I instinctively used my broken arm, I reached out for the flashlight. I accidentally bumped into it while attempting to grab a hold of it, which caused it to roll innocently away, and drop into a hole in the ground, vanishing for good. The realization hit me like a freight train, that I hadn't actually reached the bottom of the well, but a plateau endlessly far away from the top, and equally far from the bottom. I peeked over the edge, and looked as the flashlight fell, shrinking until its once bright light became little more than a dot in the distance. I pulled out my phone. With its screen half broken, and the backside crushed, it was still my last beacon of hope in the literal pit of hopelessness I'd fallen into. I used the dim light from the shattered screen to observe my narrow surroundings, but apart from the hole going further down, there was little help to be found. “Hello, lady, are you still there? ” I called out, but no one responded. I didn't even think about helping her anymore. I just didn't want to be alone. The rope I'd used to climb down dangled inexplicably in front of me. Despite the distance I'd fallen, and the fact that the rope only reached for about fifty feet, it still existed impossibly within the darkness, taunting me with its presence. I couldn't hope to climb it up with a broken arm. Even if I could somehow grab onto the rope, it still seemed endlessly far to the top. I couldn't even see the opening anymore, and nothing but darkness existed above. Then, I heard a familiar voice coming from outside of the well... “I'm telling you, this is where I saw him last night, ” a muffled voice said. It was the cop from yesterday, the one that had questioned me about the screaming woman. “And he's not answering the door? You sure he's the one that called? ” another voice chimed in. “Positive, same number. He seemed a bit out of it though. I'm guessing he wasn't all there, if you know what I mean. ” “Poor sap, he really just wanted to help some woman that didn't exist, huh? ” “Yep, we'll circle around the house again, but then we're heading back, no point wasting time here again. ” I called out for help, hoping they'd somehow hear my cries, but it was futile. They couldn't hear the woman call for help; how would they hear me? I tried to call my colleagues, my friends, basically anyone on my short contact list, but they're not picking up. So, I'm using what little battery I have left to write this, to beg for help before time runs out. I can't climb out of this hole alone, and my only other route goes further down into the endless abyss of darkness. Please, I need help, but whatever you do, don't climb down the well, and don't follow the screaming.

The north tower is my favourite out of the two becuase I think it's intenna makes it more of a landmark. Reaction to Pixar's latest film has been mixed. Image: disney/pixar The first reactions to Onward are out, and while most agree that Pixar's latest film is good fun, not everyone is enchanted. Set in a magical world populated by fantasy creatures, Onward follows two elf brothers voiced by Marvel co-stars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt. After an attempt to resurrect their dead father for a day only summons his legs, the pair go on a quest to bring back his top half before time runs out. The story has all the makings of the kind of heartstring-tugging fare Pixar has gained a reputation for, alongside some wacky, magical hijinks. Many who attended early screenings found Onward sweet and entertaining, with emotional moments that hit particularly hard for people who have lost a parent. However, some found the plot fairly thin, particularly in comparison to the astronomical standards audiences tend to have for Pixar movies. Pati Patni Aur Woh is a progressive joyride. At the box office, the film has all it takes to prove a success story on account of an impressive star cast, popular music and dollops of comedy.
Director Mudassar Aziz's Pati Patni Aur Woh is a recipe for a paisa vasool entertainer. The film is a humorous farce on the subject of sex. It's not the most original or charming comedy, but it does most things well and provides value for money in those two hours. In the spirit, Pati Patni Aur Woh is akin to David Dhawan movies. Mudassar Aziz attempts a comic caper that drives you nuts. His mantra is very clear: Garnish the enterprise with witty one-liners, hip-swinging music and throw logic to the winds. Comedy is a difficult emotion to capture on celluloid and to pull it off and make the moviegoer laugh non-stop for 2+ hours is even more difficult. And Pati Patni Aur Woh works mainly because the gags and punches in the enterprise are truly funny and relatable.
The film has several things going in its favour but the camaraderie the three actors share is, undoubtedly, one of the USPs of the enterprise. In a nutshell, it is a chill pill every entertainment-hungry moviegoer would like to relish. The sole idea is to entertain and the film delivers what it promises. When you saunter into the cinema hall, just don't wear your thinking caps and you'd enjoy the film from start to end.
Jasmeet K Reen's adaptation of the original script is not a copy-paste job. A lot of modifications are done keeping in mind the contemporary taste of the viewers. Although the film has its share of funny and entertaining moments, the pace is erratic. There's no denying the fact that Pati Patni Aur Woh could've been better. It suffers from a slow build-up, the pace dips at places and emotions might be a huge turn-off as they ambush the comical sequences. Also, John Stewart Eduri's background score is plain ordinary. Chirantan Das' cinematography is limited to the touristy locales of Kanpur and Lucknow. He could've captured so much more. The songs are better stand-alone, but they lose their charm in the film. Also, the placement of the songs seems forced.
Director Mudassar Aziz isn't in complete form. If only he would've picked up a riveting story to make a stronger impression. Also, the twist in the climax is badly executed. But the key asset of Pati Patni Aur Woh is Mudassar Aziz's witty dialogues. Also, the film is visually exciting. The usage of bright colours makes it look glamorous.
If the film belongs to anyone, it's Kartik Aaryan and Aparshakti Khurana. They are absolutely remarkable, proving that their timing for comic sequences is just perfect. Kartik Aaryan endears to the viewers completely. He's sure to walk away with all the glory with this performance. Aparshakti Khurana is just brilliant, bringing the house down with his performance. Bhumi Pednekar excels in a role that seems tailormade. WOW!
Ananya Panday looks the part she has been asked to portray and she looks convincing. She is sure to be noticed. Manu Rishi Chaddha and Neeraj Sood are superb as always. Sunny Singh looks dashing in a special appearance. Kriti Sanon adds to the oomph with her cameo.
All said and done, Pati Patni Aur Woh focuses on wit and humour rather than logic. With crisp editing (Ninad Khanolkar) the film is sure to regale viewers and also strike gold at the box-office. You may call it cliched or formulaic, but it works big time. Go have fun.

What a wonderful play! I've seen it more than 20 times in tears.
Ive booked for October as a birthday gift. I dont live in the Uk so itll be a bit of hassle with traveling and booking but totally worth it. I chose to see JOJ because I cannot stand Alfie with his zero emotions and operatic-full-force voice. Ive seen JOJ and Carrie in Dubai a few years ago and Im so thrilled to see Carrie plays Fantine. The cherry on the top is Michael Ball - as someone who listens to the 10th anniversary concert religiously; seeing Ball is a dream comes true.

For a movie based on a book about a board game, Welcome to the Jungle found a good premise: four teenagers of varying social positions would be forced to inhabit the bodies of avatars that looked suspiciously like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan. The stars, then, would also be forced to inhabit the teenagers: Dwayne Johnson would improbably play an insecure nerd, Kevin Hart a strapping athlete frustrated by his newly diminutive frame, Jack Black a popular queen bee type aghast to find herself as a middle-aged man, and Karen Gillan an awkward girl shocked by her newfound action-heroine coordination. It was a perfectly timed gambit, coinciding with the downfall of the broadly popular Hollywood comedy. Welcome to the Jungle may have looked like a high-concept action-adventure, but it was really offering star-driven laughs. The new follow-up Jumanji: The Next Level isnt as conceptually inspired — few sequels are — but it definitely understands that the new Jumanji movies are, at their heart, body-swap comedies. The teenage characters, back in their normal forms, have been separated for their first semester at college and are reuniting for holiday break. Spencer (Alex Wolff) pining for his time in Dwayne Johnsons super-body avatar, impulsively heeds the call of the broken video game console and gets sucked back into the world of Jumanji. Once his friends realize whats happened, they set out to rescue him. But director and co-writer Jake Kasdan doesnt stick them all back in the same bodies. Martha (Morgan Turner) once again takes the form of Karen Gillans Lara Croft-ish badass, but Fridge (SerDarius Blain) is now Jack Blacks tweedy map-reader, while Johnson and Hart are “played” by Spencers Grandpa Eddie (Danny DeVito) and his former best friend Milo (Danny Glover) respectively, who have also been sucked into the digital world. Johnson does a game (if not exactly spot-on) imitation of DeVitos rasp, while Hart does a (quite spot-on) imitation of Danny Glovers gentility. Thats just the setup; the movie goes further into body-swap territory and introduces Awkwafina as another gaming avatar, among other complications. For pure laughs, The Next Level might outdo its predecessor. Hart milks a funny running gag about the leisurely pace of Milos speech, which would be maddening if not for its unflagging good nature, which somehow makes it funnier. Its also a kick to see the artist formerly known as The Rock scrunch up his face and bark “HAH? ” in confusion, suggesting that Grandpa Eddie has less of a hearing problem than a comprehension one. Body-swapping, or character-shifting comedy, has long been a stunt that allows some virtuosic comic actors to rise to the occasion; think of Steve Martin sharing his body with the ghost of Lily Tomlin in All of Me, Eddie Murphy double-cast in Bowfinger (and quintuple-cast in other movies) or Tom Hanks playing an overgrown 13-year-old in Big. Its neat to see the Jumanji series sneak some of that old-fashioned performance value into a big-ticket Hollywood blockbuster. Because the “real” characters are so flat and uninspired, theres a limit to how far their comic avatars can go. The personas twist, but they dont really develop or escalate, settling instead for the kind of rote lesson-learning that turns adventure movies and comedies alike into self-improvement seminars. Eddie and Milo address a decades-long rift over a restaurant they used to co-own; the kids relearn some of the lessons from the first movie. A decade or so ago, Tropic Thunder stuck Jack Black in the jungle with Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., and more, and let its cast play off each others personas. The Next Level thinks the milk-bland personalities of its central teenagers and a couple of cranky old people count as a rooting interest to ground the hijinks. Black, Hart, and Awkwafina could be a comedy dream team; instead, theyre stuck hustling around a bunch of video game battles. This would be less of a sticking point if the Jumanji movies really were cracking action adventures. But while Kasdan has made some fine comedies (and one all-timer, the terrific comic detective picture Zero Effect) his command of set pieces lacks the playfulness he brings to the funny bits. Theres a specific action sequence involving a herd of angry monkeys and a series of rickety, rotating bridges that a director like Gore Verbinski might have choreographed with pizazz; Kasdans version turns into a smeary CG-blur of some cool ideas and momentary thrills. Earlier in the movie, a chase involving a desert vehicle and a bunch of ostriches is downright dull. Hordes of CG animals probably do count as part of the Jumanji brand, so its unlikely that they would disappear entirely. But its still a shame to see these actors thrown to the ostriches with such abandon. In the end, the performers high energy feels weirdly thankless; they shift their voices and their posture and their personalities, and theyre all still just subsumed into blockbuster noise. In other words, dont count on anyone reaching into the Hollywood game and rescuing comedy anytime soon.
